The Lego Ultimate Building Set includes everything a child needs to take the first steps to becoming an expert Lego builder. It includes one mini figurine, a building plate, and a wide mix of standard bricks in various colors as well as house and wheel elements.

I bought this for my children and to relive my days of playing with Legos in the 1970s. The kids really enjoy playing with them. I like this generic collection of mult-purpose bricks better than the sets that are designed to build one unique item. For the price (normally around twenty five dollars), you get a reasonable amount of stuff.

This is such a fabulous starter set for Legos. It has all the right "boy" parts in it including airplane propellers, race car steering wheels, etc. This set is very well loved in this house and has built everything from race tracks to helicopters. Great, great fun and provides HOURS of entertainment. If you are getting these for a true Lego afficionado, be sure to pick up a couple of them. It has quite a few pieces but to truly build a bunch of stuff, you'll need more. Wait for a sale, however, Easter and Christmas usually provides a great sale at the giant toystore with an r in the name.

Little Mommy Doctor Mommy Doll

Little Mommy Doctor Mommy Doll: This little girl is not feeling well, but her mommy can make her feel all better. It's got all the right tools for a standard doctor checkup and they are relatively well made. My kids use the ear thermometer like one you slide on the forehead and they use the play shot syringe like a medicine dropper which they fill from the medicine bottle (which does have a dropper in the top) because that's how they take medicine.

The stethoscope with the heart beat was a novelty, but a heartbeat sound that you hear through the stethoscope would have been more educational and realistic. The plastic case is just one open compartment so I will be making some alterations to provide organization and to prevent it all from dumping out when the case is opened. Still, the case holds all the parts and the latch is secure but easy for little ones to open on their own.

 NOW the bad news. The doll has a horrible lispy voice and she doesn't shut off or have a volume button so when the kids leave her to play with something else, the adults are subjected to that whiney voice over and over again until you want to euthanize the horrid little thing. The doll's body is very rigid making her uncuddley at the best of times and her hair is long but thin and stringy so I'm sure it will need a cut before too long.

 

With them in, this doll develops a shining forehead for a fever, slurps medicine, and tells Mommy what is wrong with her, fever, sore throat, don't feel well. Using the right instruments makes her all better. However, she soon needs attention once again (germy little thing), and my granddaughter found it more fun to turn off her demands and simply treat her where and how she wanted. She is also using the Dr kit on her other animals.

Overall, this is a fun doll if your child likes playing Doctor Mommy. The accessories are fun and your child can learn a little about the different tools and how they are used. I think this could make a girl feel more comfortable about visiting the (real) doctor. The interactive sounds and phrases are nicely done. But for us, a lot of frustration came from using the purple medicine and the tongue depressor. I think this is a great concept and wonderful if your child frequently wants to play the role of doctor.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer

I was really excited to receive the new LeapPad2 because I saw the recommended age changed for 4-9 years to 3-9 years. My son just turned 3. Firstly, we own the original LeapPad, which was a huge disappointment. My main complaint was how slow it was. The LeapPad2, I'm happy to report, is much quicker! Not as quick as an iPad, but quicker than the original version. Setting both side by side the LeapPad2 reaches the main screen and loads games much quicker. Also, the resolution on the LeapPad2 is significantly clearer than the original.

Right out of the box I had to add 4 AA batteries (not included) and connect to a computer for setup; all easy enough. The original LeapPad used the stylus to click open the battery compartment. LeapPad2 just has sliding compartments. My son can't open it, so that's a plus. Also, the new way helps him hold the LeapPad better because it creates a raised backing for his hands.

The original LeapPad came with two styluses, LeapPad2 only one. LeapPad2 has an optional rope loop on the bottom for lefties. My 3 year old is a righty, but my 16 month old is leaning towards a leftie; since they'll have to share this it's good to have the option.

The front and back camera is a nice touch. My son isn't into using it yet, but I love that when he is, he can click away on his LeapPad2 and have fun.

 Overall this is a great educational product for little kids and keeps my son off my iPad. Really love it and recommend it. Certainly something my sons will grow with. I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5 because I'm always going to wish it would respond quicker when starting and loading, and the apps were cheaper. My son would give it 5 billion stars because he likes it so much.
